A framework of modelling slip-controlled crack growth in polycrystals using crystal plasticity and XFEM

چکیده
Short cracks tend to develop at high and irregular rates compared macroscopic cracks, making the prediction of fatigue life a challenging task. In this work, numerical framework combining crystal plasticity model Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) is applied study slip-controlled short crack growth in polycrystal superalloy RR1000. The calibrated from experiments used evaluate paths rates. Two fracture criteria are compared: onset controlled by total individual cumulative shear strain respectively, grows either perpendicular direction maximum principal or along crystallographic directions.

Realistic microstructure-based modelling of cyclic deformation and crack growth using crystal plasticity
Using crystal plasticity, finite element analyses were carried out to model cyclic deformation for a low solvus high refractory (LSHR) nickel superalloy at elevated temperature. The analyses were implemented using a representative volume element (RVE), consisting of realistic microstructure obtained from SEM images of the material. Monotonic, stress-relaxation and cyclic test data at 725 C were...
متن کاملCrystal plasticity and crack initiation in a single-crystal nickel-base superalloy Modelling, evaluation and applications
In this dissertation the work done in the projects KME-410/502 will be presented. The overall objective in these projects is to evaluate and develop tools for designing against fatigue in single-crystal nickel-base superalloys in gas turbines. Experiments have been done on single-crystal nickel-base superalloy specimens in order to investigate the mechanical and fatigue behaviour of the materia...
متن کاملCrack Interaction Studies Using XFEM Technique
In this paper, edge crack problems under mechanical loads have been analysed using extended finite element method (XFEM) as it has proved to be a competent method for handling problems with discontinuities. The XFEM provides a versatile technique to model discontinuities in the solution domain without re-meshing or conformal mesh. The stress intensity factors (SIF) have been calculated by domai...
متن کاملModelling of Crack Growth Using a New Fracture Criteria Based Peridynamics
Peridynamics (PD) is a nonlocal continuum theory based on integro-differential equations without spatial derivatives. The elongation fracture criterion is implicitly incorporated in the PD theory, and fracture is a natural outcome of the simulation. On the other hand, a new fracture criterion based on the crack opening displacement combined with peridynamic (PD-COD) is proposed. When the relati...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Semi-Elliptical Axial Crack in Pipe Bend Using XFEM
In this work, XFEM is employed to obtain the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of a semi elliptical part through thickness axial crack. In XFEM, additional functions are employed to enrich the displacement approximation using partition of unity approach. Level set functions are approximated using higher order shape functions in the crack front elements to ensure the accurate modeling of the crack...
